Oral extraction techniques have been shown to cause much fewer post-interventional complications in horses compared to surgical extraction techniques. Performing oral dental extractions should however not be taken lightly as complications like dental fractures, retained root tips, collateral damage etc. can easily occur and require in-depth anatomical knowledge, good technical skills and clinical versatility to resolve. This 2-day highly practical boutique Course (max. 24 attendees) is aimed at practitioners with a good working knowledge in equine dentistry who want to learn about various oral dental extraction techniques, how to apply them clinically and managing arising complications. The panel of internationally renowned specialists will be sharing technical tips and tricks and pearls of wisdom that they have accumulated over the many years of working in equine dental practice.

Between both afternoons the 7 hours of practical sessions will provide an intimate environment for attendees to develop their practical skills on equine specimens in true small groups (2-3 vets per specimen) at the following stations:

  • Oral Examination & Endoscopy
  • Diagnostic Imaging – Radiography etc.
  • Local Anesthetic Techniques (incl. TMJ)
  • Incisor & Canine Extractions
  • Oral Extraction Techniques for Cheek Teeth I
  • Oral Extraction Techniques for Cheek Teeth II

The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine and cheese reception. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

This course is suitable for RCVS Modules: B-EP.3; C-E.1; C-E.2; C-E.5; C-E.12; C-E.13; C-E.14; C-E.15; C-EP.16

On 15.02.2020 the equine clinic in Kirchheim invites you to its traditional advanced training event in Bad Boll. This year's event will deal with the topic: diseases, tumours & injuries of the skin in horses. Well-known veterinarians and professors will speak about diagnostic procedures, various skin diseases and infections caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, hereditary skin diseases and tumour treatments will be discussed.

Im Verlauf der letzten 20 Jahren hat die Zahl der Pferde im fortgeschrittenen Alter als Folge des medizinischen Fortschritts und der Wandlung der Beziehung der Pferdehalter zu ihren Tieren, dramatisch zugenommen. Dies hat zu einer Vielzahl von neuen medizinischen und haltungsbedingten Herausforderungen für Tierärzte geführt.

Dieser 2-tägige Kurs ist auf Pferdetierärzte ausgerichtet, die ihre praktischen Fähigkeiten und Kenntnisse in Bezug auf ältere Pferde und die folgenden Krankheiten/Probleme weiter entwickeln wollen: Gewichtsverlust, Zahnprobleme, Cushings, Hufbeschlag, Osteoarthritis, Hufrehe, kardiopulmonalen Erkrankungen, Neoplasien und wie das ältere Sportpferd fit gehalten werden kann.

In the mornings the following topics will be covered by the world-renowned and highly experienced clinicians through well-illustrated lectures and case presentations:

  • How to keep the Senior Sports Horse Competing (Joint Problems & Tendon/Ligament Injuries)
  • How to work up the horse with weight-loss
  • Diagnosing Prevalent Dental Problems of the Senior Horse
  • PPID / Metabolic Syndrome – Diagnostics, Therapies & Management
  • Shoeing Strategies for Older Athletes
  • The geriatric Metabolism – Sedation, Anaesthesia & Devising appropriate treatment protocols
  • Making the most of the haematology & biochemistry
  • Feeding & Management of the Elderly Horse
  • Cardiopulmonary Disease in the older Horse
  • Dental Therapies in Elderly Horses
  • Colic and its Treatment in Senior Horses

In the afternoons, 8 hours of practical and case-based sessions will give attendees ample opportunity to update and develop new skills on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine), all under the supervision of the instructors. Each attendee will rotate through the following practical and case-based sessions:

  • Senior Dental Exam & Diagnostic Techniques
  • Cardiothoracic & Vascular Ultrasound
  • Dental Therapeutic Techniques for Elderly Horses
  • Endocrine PowerPoint Case-Discussions
  • Pre-Purchase Exam of the older Sports Horse – Tips & Tricks
  • Radiography Wetlab – Regions chosen by each Groups:Fetlock, Stifle or Cervical Spine
  • Ophthalmologic Ultrasound & Procedures – Nerve blocks, lavage system placement, keratotomy etc.
  • Medical Challenges in Older Athletes – Case-Discussions
